We got engaged…..a month ago :) Pretty darn happy.
Here you can see us taking pictures as if we’re the preteens I teach.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
I spent my weekend with a group of educated and socially conscious individuals. I overheard a conversation, well, a monologue, that one individual was giving about how African-Americans and others are not taught about African-American history. She also proceeded to give specific examples of times she’s had to “educate” others because of their offensive/uninformed statements. Now, granted, I do feel that every person can speak of a time where they have encountered an offensive individual, specifically people who are considered minorities. Anyway, throughout her monologue she mentions that someone she attends school with consistently compares the Civil Rights Movement to the rights LGBTs are fighting for today. She clearly disagreed. She went on to say that they were not the same because there has never been a group of people who have been killed because of who they are (raised eyebrow number one), and that “gays” (that’s her word, not mine) usually kill themselves (raised eyebrow number two). She also continued to say that there was that “one boy who lived in that one state” who had been killed, but that was it.
I often times get confused when a member of a minority demographic who has been oppressed finds it ok to trivialize the struggle of another minority demographic. I also find it interesting that many African-Americans consider themselves to be liberal, but gag at the thought of marriage equality. I know I’m not perfect, and I have prejudice, but I was appalled by her statements.
My students dont understand why I get offended when they use “gay” to degrade someone or call people a “fag/faggot” as an insult. It’s just for me, as a human, as an individual on this earth, the degrading and oppression of anyone should be offensive.
Happy Birthday @imryanw!!
I know the usual tradition is to indulge in Girl Scout’s piece of heaven on your birthday. BUT, considering I’m attempting to eat healthier, I’ll have to break it just for this year.
So yeah, see you in less than two weeks?! Crazy, right?

taktophoto: Then and Now Photos of Abandoned Detroit School
Sent this to my friend from Detroit. It’s actually her alma mater. Apparently it’s been demolished already because they’ve built a new school.
Spring Break! Get to see @experiencethewarmth. @imryanw?!?
The aforementioned 7th grader said her favorite music artist was The Foreign Exchange.
My heart stopped beating for .5 seconds.
